Energy constraints force Pentagon to draw up its first battlefield energy plan.

The plan describes the need for more fuel efficient weaponry and use of alterative energy, including portable solar. The WSJ reports that soaring costs in Iraq and Afghanistan, and reliance on vulnerable fuel convoys, have had much to do with this. Energy and Capital reports that 3,000 soldiers have lost their lives in fuel supply convoy attacks since 2003 and 80% of all supply trucks in Afghanistan and Iraq are carrying fuel.
