“Google’s AI fest offers an ominous glimpse of the robot future”: Richard Waters in the FT

Among Waters’s concerns: “Isn’t a computer voice that can trick you into engaging in conversation destined to become the political robocall from hell?”

Social media theorist Zeynep Tufekci was among those concerned by the demo. She tweeted that it was “horrifying” and described Silicon Valley as “ethically lost”.

On 11th May, responding to criticism, Google said that the assistant will routinely identify itself as a robot.

Regulators should require that all robots identify themselves as such ahead of any human interaction.
