Russia is only 12th in the global economic league table, and not likely to move up soon

Financial Times: “In many areas, the country is so far from Mr Putin’s 2024 goals that his plans appear to be not just ambitious but outright utopian.”

A reminder that, as in the Gorbachev years of the Cold War, Russia ought to have an interest in a common security approach, simply on because of the difficulty they will have competing economically. Admittedly, Presdient Putin’s actions give very little sense that this might be the case, unlike the desperation for arms control evident in the last few years of Gorbachev’s Presidency.
