Amazon’s AI lets governments track all faces …there is “no way to use this and not harm citizens”

“As academics who have studied IT and privacy, including the social implications of face recognition and biometrics, we are calling on Amazon to get out of the surveillance business”: Peter Asaro et al.

“The threat that such a massive, automated surveillance apparatus poses to society far outweighs the security benefits it could provide.”

If this continues to roll out, without either tech leaders like Bezos thinking twice, or regulators intervening on a scale to match the threat, then the west will be able to lock its citizenry down via surveillance capitalism just as easily as the Chinese will via authoritarian communism.
