Scotland sets one of the toughest greenhouse-gas targets in the world: a binding cut of 90% by 2050

Up from 80%, with a new interim target for 2020 of a 56% compared with the existing goal of 42%. NGOs wanted net zero by 2050.

Competition in setting Paris targets is vital, and it is fine for politicians to grandstand a little when top of the table. But it is also vital for NGOs to speak truth to power: we have no option but zero by 2050, and Scotland is spectacularly endowed to do this.

Note: Sweden has the toughest: net zero, including at least 85% domestic emission cuts, by 2045.
